The Kindness of People We Don't Know: How a Gentleman I Only Just Encountered Supported Me Secure the Role That Altered My Path

In the final years of the 1980s, I was embarking on a budget travel adventure to the European continent with a companion. Since my companion was exploring pursuing a master’s degree in New York, we had arranged a 14-day stopover there on the way to London.

We got to the postgrad residence, a large multi-story edifice on the UWS called International House. Setting down our luggage, we headed straight to the canteen, where we got some food, found a table, and began chatting with people eating there.

Beside me was an gentleman from Iraq enrolled in an engineering program at a prestigious New York university. He inquired what I did, and I shared that I had recently completed my studies with a scientific background and had been working on studies involving microscopic analysis.

He pointed out that there was an research lab at the institution – close to the school of engineering, which was why he was aware of it. He recommended that I consider applying for a position with them. I dismissed the idea, telling him that I was soon departing to Europe and, even more importantly, I didn’t have a US visa.

The following day I ventured out, going back to the cafeteria that evening. The engineering student came up to me and told me that he had arranged an interview for me with the director of the microscopy lab at Columbia. Since he had made the arrangement, I showed up for the discussion – but right away told my interviewer that I didn’t have a visa, so I was unable to accept the role.

Reflecting the city's spirit – a city where anything feels possible – she declared: “That can be arranged. How soon can you begin?” I missed my plane to London.

I worked there for 36 months. A perk of the job was that I also received complimentary education at Columbia, and I took advantage to finish a master’s of international affairs.

We didn't cross paths after that and I am unaware of his name, but his remarkable generosity altered my destiny in numerous aspects. I would never have had the bravery or self-belief to reach out at an Ivy League university and seek a position. Moreover, I had consistently hoped to pursue education overseas, but could never have afforded it without that free tuition.

Critically, that job in New York paved the way for a position in Switzerland where I got to know my wonderful partner, with whom I am raising four amazing children. It was a total sliding doors moment. That kind stranger set me on a different course in life, and I’m always appreciative.
